Let’s face it, there are always going to be people in life that rub us the wrong way, drain our energy or leave us feeling irritated.
As one of my favourite poets, Rumi says- ‘if you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?”
Seemingly “negative” people or influences come into our lives not to harass us, but to teach us something. We have to remember that we are all connected, so what you observe in someone else exists in you as well.
If you are surrounded by negative influences that you can’t really escape like in your work environment or even in your family, there are some things that you can do to protect your energy.
But before we get into these techniques, it is really important to remember that “negative” people are people too.
Showing love and respect to them is extremely important, because remember- we are all connected. How you treat another person is reflected in how you treat yourself and the world.
Even though it can be hard to be kind to someone who is treating you poorly, be mindful of allowing your ego to get involved.
Negative people are pained people, and you don’t need to make it worse by judging them, labelling them or gossiping about them behind their back.
This type of energy will only exacerbate the negativity and keep you stuck in their tangled web.
Don’t feed into their drama or add to it; employ these techniques instead:
Protect Your Solar Plexus Chakra
Your Solar Plexus Chakra sits near your belly button and is where you create energetic attachments or cords with people.
We all have energetic cords that originate from the Solar Plexus and attach to other people’s Solar Plexus. Some cords can be very thin and light, some can be healthy and strong, but some can be unhealthy or even toxic.
Think of these cords of attachment as the flow of energy between one person and another.
When the connection is harmonious the energy flows harmoniously, but when the connection is not healthy, the energy flows in a sluggish way.
The energy may also only flow on one side, which is why you may feel drained after hanging out with a particular person.
We all have energetic cords with people we meet, soul mates, kindred spirits and people from our past lives. And part of our experience on Earth is learning to deal with all types of connections.
Visualize Healing the Connection
If there is a particular person in your life that is troubling you, perhaps take a moment to still your mind and visualize the type of cord you have created with this person.
Our imagination is often very good at picking up on the subconscious energetic patterns we may have created.
Once you have an understanding of the energetic cord, you can visualize how you want the cord to look or you can do a cord cutting ritual.
This cord cutting ritual is great for “resetting” the cords that you have between another person.
Another trick to protect your Solar Plexus Chakra from negative influences is by shielding your stomach area with your arms.
This can help prevent your energy from being drained and can also stop you from getting sucked into their energy.
Simply wrap your arms casually around your stomach area and turn your body slightly to the side whenever you have to encounter a negative situation.
If you ever see someone standing in this position, they may be subconsciously doing it to protect their energy!
Protect Your Heart Chakra
The Heart Chakra is another energy center where we create connections with people. While we all have cords with people from our Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra cords are not as common.
Heart Chakra connections are often seen between lovers, soul mates, and very deep past life connections.
Negative energy cannot actually flow into the Heart Chakra, instead the Heart Chakra just shuts down and becomes blocked off. This is not so much a problem in the short term, but in the long term it can cause the energy of your heart to become weak.
To protect your Heart Chakra, consider wearing a necklace with a protective crystal. Try to have the crystal on a long chain so it sits as close to your heart as possible.
Some good protective crystals for the Heart Chakra include any pink or green ones like rose quartz and jade.
And finally, if the situation is becoming too hard to manage and if it’s costing you far too much of your peace, it may be time to remove yourself from the situation all together.
When in doubt, ask yourself this question- “What is the most loving thing I can do for myself ?” And then follow through with the answer.
