Drone Footage Reveals a Forgotten Kingdom Inside a Mysterious Cave in Vietnam

Hang Son Doong (“River Mountain Cave”) was the largest unexplored subterranean cave in the world, until now. The mysteries of this wondrous cave in Vietnam’s Phong Nha-Ke Bàng National Park have been revealed by photographer Ryan Deboodt with the help of a drone and a GoPro camera.

Deboodt was one of the lucky few who got to camp inside the cave for eight days in 2015.

His drone footage shows how vast the cave system is, with walls that are as high as 650 feet from floor to ceiling and over 500-feet wide. The biggest cavern in Hang Son Doong is so massive, it could easily fit a Boeing 747.

The sheer size of the cave has created a unique environment with its own weather patterns that include wind currents, fog, and clouds.

The main chamber is illuminated by two sinkholes that let in daylight and help support two large forests containing birds, bugs, snakes, and even a species of fish and translucent wood louse.

Showing the beauty of this natural wonder wasn’t Deboodt’s only intention for publishing his drone footage. He told National Geographic that he also wants to raise awareness of the destruction happening on the land around Hang Son Doong, which is being cleared for farming.
